Gateway to the West Martial Arts Benefit Seminar Event Recap

Group shot with Guro Wes Bennett, Guro Mike Schwarz, Guro Mike Casto & seminar friends.
ALL PHOTOS COURESY OF WES BENNETT PHOTOGRAPHY
I'm always amazed by the generosity & dedication of those instructors along with students who participate each year to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.  Each year with no political agenda a group of Martial Arts instructors who "walk the walk" showing there's no need to "talk the talk" when their best foot is moving forward for a great cause.

There was a spectacular display of Lucaylucay Kali, by Master's Hall of Fame & Kick Punch Hall of Fame awardee Guro Wes Bennett.  Guro Wes worked the group masterfully through the Numerado drill of Kali.

Guro Mike Casto applying side stick choke

Guro Mike Casto shared his insights of Cacoy Doce Pares & Silat.  While later Guro Mike Schwarz shared the intricacies of D/C Serrada System of Escrima with flavor of it's own.

Though some familiar faces were missing at this event due to prior commitments, we hope that they will join us at the next event.  It is with the cooperation of the entire martial arts community that can grow this event larger & stronger each year.

Although, I'm certain similar form letters are sent to thousands each year, I did want to share this letter I received from the Wounded Warrior Project.  Thanks again to all instructors & attendees who donated their valuable time.
Guro Michael Schwarz
President of the WSEF

Dear Michael,
Your support of Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) is not only meaningful to America's injured warriors — it plays a key role in changing their lives. I'd like you to read what these heroes have to say about the impact you have made during their recovery.
After reflecting on their heartfelt words, I hope you'll be moved to stand by injured warriors during their difficult journey.
William E. Thomas, Jr. describes how powerfully the WWP community has changed his life since his injury:
“WWP had such a profound effect on me. I could communicate with other warriors about our traumas and how it affected us. It was an opportunity to talk to people who know exactly what I’m talking about — those who were directly involved in some of the same things that I’ve experienced.”
Brian Schwitters speaks of his experience at a Project Odyssey™:
“It showed me I’m not alone. It opened up my eyes to the wealth of information and benefits at WWP and all the resources available to individuals.” You are the support system wounded veterans need through their recovery. Every time an injured warrior or family member thanks WWP, their gratitude rightly belongs to you. That’s why I want to share their words with you and why I’m counting on you to appreciate the urgent need for your continued support of WWP programs and services. Thank you for all you do to empower our heroes.

Sincerely,

Steven Nardizzi
Executive Director

"Mastering Eskrima Disarms" book review by Guro Michael Schwarz

It's been a couple of months since I'd received my autographed copy of the latest publication by GM Guro Dr. Mark Wiley.  Dr. Wiley has been a long time friend of co-founder GGM *D* for decades.  Mastering Eskrima Disarms as with all of Dr. Wiley's literary efforts is exquisite & chalked full of historical documentation in picture form of so many Eskrima Systems displayed by he & the system founders, Masters & Grandmasters.

As with all of Dr. Wiley's literary works, he explores the techniques from a foundational, fundamental level & moves forward to the finish. Too many times a author will delve far too much in theoretical methods as opposed to realistic methods that can work. Dr. Wiley is exceptional in word & demonstration.

Dr. Wiley has encompassed so many systems, from Cabales Serrada Escrima, D/C Serrada System of Escrima, Illustrisimo Kali, Bahala Na, Eskabo Daan, Doce Pares, Modern Arnis just to name a few.  Truly, one must read the work several times in order to appreciate the depth contained within the book.  I'm working on my 4th read & still finding refinement points that I had missed during the previous reads.  This book has so much information within it that I believe this will be counted among the most historical documentations of Filipino Martial Arts.  I commend Dr. Wiley on his continuing efforts to document the FMA with the dignity all the systems deserve.

The WSEF an organization, humbly recommend "Mastering Eskrima Disarms" as well as previous works by Dr. Wiley.

Escrima ... A Long Life Sport by Robert Samaniego

An article written in a local NorCal newspaper many years ago ...

Eighty-one-year-old Leo Giron of Stockton vividly remembers playing
with under a mango tree with one of his siblings. It was a game they
would play after helping out in the fields. In 1926, at the age of
fifteen, Giron would come to America, not knowing that the stick game
he played as a child would become a major factor in his life.
His first job in this new country was pruning trees at an
orchard in Meridian, California, northwest of Yuba City. There he
worked alongside many of the Filipinos that came during the time. It
was here where he met up with Flabiano Vergara, who reintroduced him
to art of stick-fighting. Flabiano was an older fellow who was a
veteran in stick-fighting, and he "taught" Giron the Largamano and De
Fundo techniques.
The variation between techniques is that the Largamano is is executed
with a longer stick and the De Fundo with a shorter stick. De Fundo is
considered to be the old style of stick-fighting and Largamano was of
the new style.
Soon to follow was the 'Stelo Serrado', which uses a much shorter stick, and
then progresses on to the bare-hand-techniques. Flabiano coached Leo
in mastering these techniques after their work in the orchards. In
1943, Leo Giron enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the 2nd.
Filipino infantry.
The Filipinos were issued bolo knives and were trained
for jungle warfare. Even away from the fields and his friend Flabiano,
stick-fighting again resurfaced. There was a time in when an American
Sergeant, challenged him to defend himself
There was a push broom and a short stick in the room, and when given
the choice, Leo picked the shorter stick. The Sergeant was a man much
larger than Leo, but nevertheless, the Sergeant armed with the push
broom, charged Leo bayonet-style.
The Sergeant agressively fought although never got close to Leo. To his suprise,
he was always getting hit by the (shorter stick). From that day on the Sergeant gave his
full respect to the Filipino art of stick-fighting.

"Physician Heal Thyself "

"Physician Heal Thyself "

By SGM *D*
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back around 1989, prior to my scheduled arrival in Berlin, Germany,
I was hit by a drunken driver. The car seemed to come from out of nowhere.
Smash & Crash was all I heard & felt. Thinking I was superman,

I tried to shield my older brother with
me in the car from the hard impact that had hit me on the drivers side.
Well needless to say, in the aftermath, my left shoulder &
collar bone were completely seriously injured & dislocated.

At any rate that accident caused me extreme anguish & much painful suffering.
I cried everyday because I was due to begin a new international
adventure on behalf of SGGM Angel Cabales & the Serrada System of
Escrima by relocating to Germany.

I really felt that my martial arts career was completely over.
I became so darkly depressed, and my body......
became as skinny as a tooth pick. Then it hit me, what was the point
in learning & teaching external & internal martial arts if I wasn't even able to
use them for aiding in self-healing. My whole system of martial arts is
based upon the ancient Egyptian Mystery System concept of;
"Man Heal Thyself ".

So I started out with accupuncture therapy & little moxy
bottle treatments administered by one of my Master graduate
instructor's Roberto Guadamuz. These treatments aided me tremendously
in my healing process. Next, I went to visit my Wu Shing Tai Chi
teacher, the late Great Professor John K. Wong.

After administering a thorough physical examination upon me,
Prof. Wong concluded that my internal positive & negative magnetic poles were in reverse,
causing much of my distress, and the strange phenomena that I had been experiencing.
Discovering this confliction of energies that were causing internal
distress in my body, the Professor waived his hands all around my
body, and in an instance, I automatically began to feel much better.
Within three days after this treatment, I started running on a local track,

curling light iron weights, practising my Escrima moves, and taking special
trips to Manong Angel Cabales' home in Stockton, California, etc.

Within 90-days later, I had completely rebuilt my body back into the epitome of health.
On top of that, Professor Wong awarded me a Black Instructors Sash within his
Wu Shing Tai Chi system of martial arts.

To really top things off, SGGM Angel Cabales awarded me an
"Advanced Serrada Escrima Degree", along with endless amounts of his
Masters Serrada Escrima training within his method of stick/knife fighting.

Shortly after all of these special events had taken place, I found myself on
an international airline headed for Berlin, Germany. In essence, we
can utilize our various martial arts skills & crafts for self-healing
purposes, as well as for "Self-Defense" purposes also.

FMA Digest Vol 3/2006 Exerpts

Excerpts From
Filipino Martial Arts Digest Vol. No. 3/ 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------

In publishing the Special Edition of Cabales Serrada Escrima, there have come forth comments about the interview with Grandmaster Vincent Cabales Sr. That would like to be said. The issue was put forth in an effort to find out what it was like to be the son of a legend;
"Grandmaster Angel Cabales" and to find out where, and how Serrada Escrima was progressing since his passing away.
The FMAdigest apologizes if persons concerned were insulted. In an equal opportunity, and a one time situation,
The FMAdigest has added this "Declaration of Independence" written by Grandmaster Anthony Davis.

"These are his words and the FMAdigest holds no responsibility".

Declaration of Independence
By SGM *D*

I wish to make some personal comments concerning the 'Special Edition of Serrada Escrima' on my behalf, and others, that were commented on in the article, which was an interview with Vincent Cabales Sr..Essentially, Vincent Cabales Sr. was questioned about whether or not certain of Grandmaster Angel Cabales' Master graduate, and advanced graduate students fully earned their degrees, and whether or not any of these students are currently supporting him. The first one of Angel Cabales' students mentioned is Mark V. Wiley. First of all, I know for a fact that Mr. Wiley has gone above and beyond the call of duty in financing, and promoting the
"Cabales Serrada System of Escrima".

Mr. Wiley's track record speaks for itself. Additionally, after Grandmaster Angel Cabales' death, Mr. Wiley continued to promote
Serrada Escrima in conjunction with Vincent Cabales Sr..The main division between Mr. Wiley, and Vincent Cabales Sr., is that
Vincent Cabales Sr. is attempting to override his fathers authority, by replacing his fathers personal pre-set wishes, and business agreements with Mr. Wiley, "with his own agenda".

Because Mr. Wiley refused to be coerced, physically beaten, and blackmailed into paying Vincent Cabales Sr. a substantial amount of monies in 1999, in order to publish the "Secrets of Cabales Serrada Escrima", Vincent Cabales Sr. will not endorse, nor give any credibility to Mr. Wiley's projects. Vincent Cabales Sr. vehemently vents, and criticizes Master Darren Tibon in his interview regarding his integrity towards Angel Cabales, and also, he questions his full experience as one of Grandmaster Angel Cabales' Master graduate instructor's. I can personally attest to Master Tibon' expertise as being one of Grandmaster Angel Cabales' finest Master graduate instructors.

Additionally, after Angel Cabales' death in 1991, it was Master Darren Tibon who stepped up to the plate, and helped to support
Angel Cabales' widow, and two small children financially, and otherwise. Master Tibon has been extremely instrumental in helping to guide Grandmaster Angel Cabales' youngest son Gelmar Cabales in the way of "Cabales Serrada Escrima".

As far as the "Grandmaster" title that Vincent Cabales Sr. holds, there is no such title within the "Cabales Serrada System of Escrima". The highest title within Grandmaster Angel Cabales' Escrima system is "Masters Degree". "Grandmaster" is an honorary title that was bestowed upon Master Angel Cabales by myself, that evolved out of my early Filipino martial arts association located in,
San Francisco,CA..Prior to my acknowledging Angel Cabales as an "Honorary Grandmaster" everyone, including Angel Cabales himself, referred to him only as "Master Angel Cabales".

I challenge Vincent Cabales Sr., to share with the public any written, or recorded documentation stating that he was bequeathed the title of "Grandmaster" by his father the late Angel O. Cabales. As far as being the successor to his father's "Serrada System of Escrima",
Grandmaster Angel Cabales has left behind many successors, including all of the people that Vincent Cabales Sr. has discredited, and downgraded  in his FMAdigest interview. Grandmaster Angel Cabales never officially appointed anyone as the primary dictator of his Escrima system. In essence, none of Grandmaster Angel Cabales' students have sole monopoly of the art of "Serrada Escrima".

All of my allegiance is strictly to the late SGGM Angel Cabales. Because of my allegiance to the founder of "Cabales Serrada Escrima",         the "World Serrada Escrima Federation" will always continue to exist as an independent worldwide Filipino martial arts federation.

Eloquent, Educated & Prolific in FMA Propogation

It is known throughout the Filipino Martial Arts as well as Martial Arts industry as a whole, there is no more dedicated researcher and author that Dr. Mark Wiley.  His efforts in fact finding, exploration and study of many systems of the FMA are known world wide.  Without his dedication to date, many of the founders of many FMA would not be known to this day.

Through Dr. Wiley's publications that the name of GM Angel Cabales became well known.  It is through Dr. Wiley's self determination and perseverance which allowed him to provide us all with his gift of knowledge from many of the GrandMasters no longer with us.

As in the past Dr. Wiley is continuing with his preservation of knowledge by releasing additional publications, documenting the outstanding technique and knowledge in FMA.

The WSEF, GM *D* and myself  GM *S* are looking forward to continued cooperation, collaboration and support with GM Mark Wiley.

Congratulations GM Mark Wiley & continued success.

"Proust's Magnum Opus"

Honorary GrandMaster 1st Degree Mark Wiley

A Master of Martial arts, a top notch Doctor of Internal holistic medicines, a successful journalist/writer/publisher, Father, and a dear friend to many, Grand Master Guru Mark V. Wiley is a prime example of a true craftsman of "par excellence" in all that he does, and has achieved throughout a substantial period of time. Considered by many to be one of the leading authorities within the sacred, and coveted field of Filipino martial arts, Grand Master Mark V. Wiley will never fall within the range as just being another mediocre writer/historian.

Because of his many tedious long years as a keen researcher within the area of the various distinctive methods of Filipino martial arts,
GM Mark V. Wiley is now in the eyes of many martial arts practitioners one of the primary authorities of clarity when it comes down to a better understanding of the underlying profound principles, and foundation stones that gives to these various FMA arts their true value, and true genuine validity.

Writing his first book about the fine art of 'Cabales Serrada Escrima' as far back as 1994, GM Mark V. Wiley became one of the primary catalyst, and resources that set the popularity tone for much of todays success that this particular art form is now experiencing all around the world today. I personally, owe a great deal of gratitude to GM Mark V. Wiley, as he has taught me the value of true friendship.
Additionally, I am totally proud of all that GM Mark V. Wiley has accomplished in his many years as a dedicated 'Serrada Escrima'
mentor to many.

You can be absolutely sure, that this book titled: "Mastering Eskrima Disarms" will present to you many fascinating insights into the various arts covered, and also will give you vital insights into the many 'Master Minds' who created these exotic combative styles of martial arts.

Thank you so very much Grand Master Guru Mark V. Wiley, for once again producing another essential, and very important revolutionary book of knowledge. By writing and completing this "Proust's Magnum Opus" "Remembrance of Things Past"

The Eleven Second Death Match

The Eleven Second Death Match

by | on December 31, 2012

A Very Long Death Match

Grandmaster Angel Cabales did not believe in having long fights. Most of his challenge death matchmatches lasted only 3-5 seconds with the exception of one. It lasted nearly 11 seconds and that Escrimador he nearly killed. With a ever building reputation as a highly skilled Escrimador challengers would always surface. There was a certain Escrimador who had been beating all of the opponents that he challenged in the area and felt that he was the man who cold take down Grandmaster Angel Cabales. One day while returning from Manila to visit his village before going on a voyage as Grandmaster Angel got off the boat his friends informed him of the man who wished to challenge Angel to a Death Match, Grandmaster Angel Cabales was  not shaken by this news and replied “I am not hard to find”,  and went on his way home. While Grandmaster Angel Cabales was approaching a sugar cane field he spotted another traveler on the path as the two neared each other they came face to face.

The Death Match Begins

At first Angel tried to ignore the other traveler but the man spoke, stating ” I know who you are and I am the Escrimador that will beat you.” Grandmaster Angel Cabales calmly pulled his rattan from his sack and said, “you talk to much” at this point the Death Match was on. Immediately Angel’s  foe attacked with double sinawali strikes to Angel’s headdeath match 1 which Angel blocked and closed in on his death match opponent with abanico strikes to his attackers head. “That son of a gun surprised me” Cabales stated ” He blocked my strike and right away came back with a Redondo strike to the right side of my head.” Since the man was left handed the strike came very quickly and Angel was able to catch part of the blow with a shoulder block, but the strike did glance of the top of his head. “Once I felt the strike, I did a double strike and faked to his left lower body which opened him up. The first of the double strike, I aimed high to his left ribs which I knew he would block. Then I immediately flowed into to his lower ribs. He dropped a little and blocked and blocked the strike quickly, at which time I saw my chance for an opening. So I faked low to his kneecaps, which he reacted to instantly. When he dropped he left his head wide open enough for me to jam him and quickly hit him with my triple strike to his head. Pop! Pop! Pop! was the only sound I heard. His arms dropped against his body and he fell with his knees bent to the ground. As he laid on the ground on his side, his eyes rolled back so that i could only see the whites of his eyes. His ears and nose were bleeding and he stopped breathing for a few seconds. Then His breathing came back and he looked at me with amazement and fear I thought for a second I had killed him!”

The Death Match  Was That Escrimador’s Last

“When two Escrimadors play, all they have is first, their nerve, second, their skill, and third, their luck. The one that has less of the three will lose the fight and maybe their life. Yes I was very lucky that day”, exclaimed Grandmaster Cabales. “I could have been the one lying there, but I was lucky to block that one killing blow he threw at me with my shoulder block. I will always remember those eleven seconds and that his style of fighting was  almost like mine. Nobody ever lasted more than 3-5 seconds with me up until this time. But I almost killed that Escrimador that took me to the count of eleven!” Grandmaster Angel Cabales might have said he was lucky that day but deep down inside he knew it was his superior fighting skills In Cabales Serrada Escrima that he won that Death Match!

The Training of Prison Guards With Ray Novencido

          The Training of Prison Guards

          --------------------------------------------

San Quentin State Prison houses some of the nation's most notorious
convicts. In the early eighties, members of the San Quentin State
Prison Self-Defense Training Team included, CDC Officer Skip West;
Sergeant P.T. Ward; Lieutenant Ray Novencido; Ray's former wife Jan
Novencido; and CDC Officer Rich Brunelle.

Back in 1984, while shopping for rattan sticks at "Brendan Lai's
Martial Arts Supply Shop" in San Francisco, California, SGM *D* had
the distinct honor, and pleasure of meeting former California
Department of Corrections Tactical Weapons Training Officer, Retired
Lieutenant/Captain Ray Novencido. At that point in time, there were
seven members of the San Quentin Baton/Self-Defense Training Team. In
addition to the five members mentioned above; two other members of
this specialized team included, CDC Lieutenant Fred Everly, and
retired CDC Officer, & 'World Serrada Escrima Federation' Honorary
Grandmaster Guru/ Stan Toscano.

During the course of this unique meeting, SGM *D* soon discovered that
Officer Novencido had a strong interest, and a burning desire to want
to learn more about the close-quarter empty hand/weapons tactics of
the Filipino martial art of Kali, and also specifically more about the
art of the "Cabales Serrada System of Escrima". Novencido's keen
interest to dig deeper into his native form of martial arts would be
the the quint essential pivotal juncture point that would ultimately
bring the fine arts of Kali, and the 'Cabales Serrada System of
Escrima' officially into the California Department of Corrections.

Soon after Officer Ray Novencido's official introduction into the
Filipino method of fighting by way of SGM *D*, he was formally
introduced to the legendary stick/knife fighter; SGGM Angel Cabales.
Totally convinced, and impressed with the proven effectiveness of
Serrada Escrima, and the ancient martial art of Kali, Officer
Novencido petitioned the foregoing letter to his Superior Officer
requesting the inclusion of the art of Kali into into an official
self-defense training program on behalf of all CDC personnel.

 State of California Memorandum

Date: July 29, 1984

To: R.X. PERRY, Lieutenant In-Service Training Department

From: R. NOVENCIDO, Lieutenant San Quentin Self-Defense Instructor
California State Prison, San Quentin, 94964

Subject: REQUEST FOR INCLUSION OF STRESS REDUCTION CLASS: FILIPINO
KALI (Martial Arts/ Stick Fighting) On Saturday, July 28, 1984, I
received a call from Master Guru D (Instructor), who is a Third Degree
Black Belt in karate, and a disciple of Master Angel Cabales (of
martial arts fame) he is also a personal friend of mine. Guru D is
versed in the art of Kali which is a Filipino Martial Art featuring
the use of weaponry, particularly the double sticks. Guru D expressed
his desire to teach correctional staff in the methods of stick
fighting in that it will benefit the students by enhancing their baton
training techniques and, conjunctively teaching them empty hand
techniques.

Based upon the type of setting that our employees are exposed to,
where adverse and, dangerous situations are a reality, and due to the
hostile and aggressive type of inmates housed within, I feel that a
need for on-going training in self-defense exists. I therefore request
that you consider and perhaps seek approval in implementing a Filipino
Kali martial arts class in the use of stick fighting. I have had
exposure to this course and am very impressed. The techniques are easy
to learn, to the point, and extremely effective, particularly if the
officer is facing a life or death situation. Unlike karate, kung fu,
or judo (of which I hold a Nidan rank in karate and San Kyu rank in
judo), I can attest to the fact that Kali is an effecrive art that is
economical, combatively speaking, and excellent in terms of
self-defense.

R. NOVENCIDO, Lieutenant San Quentin Self Defense Instructor
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Granted his petition, Retired CDC Officer Captain Ray Novencido
assisted WSEF Co-Founder SGM *D*, along with SGGM Angel Cabales in
formally introducing the fine art of 'Cabales Serrada Escrima' into
several California State Prison Institutions, as well as into other
California law enforcement angencies. In 1990, Grand Master *D*
relocated to Berlin, Germany, and while there, he in turn established
an affirmative 'DC/Serrada System of Escrima' "tactical
close-quarter-weapons training program" within Germany's special
anti-terrorist task force known as, (GSG9).
This elite Escrima training program was based upon the original CDC
Kali/Serrada Escrima training program that was founded back in 1984.

       What does {WSEF} stand for?

Weapon System Effectiveness Factor

---------------------------------------------------------

Back in 1990, in Stockton, California, SGM *D* had the distinct
opportunity to interview the founder of the 'Cabales Serrada System of
Escrima' the legendary SGGM Angel Cabales. The primary purpose, and
the essential aim of this interview was to chronicle SGGM Angel
Cabales' own words regarding the fundamentals behind the 'Serrada
System of Escrima' that he had founded, and established in America in
1966.

                      GGM Angel Cabales

In a nutshell, SGGM Angel Cabales stated that he primarily specialized
in the area of self-defense. He further stated that he more preferred
to teach the combative levels of his art because Escrima is
specifically designed to protect your life. Protecting one' life is
exactly why SGM *D* co-founded the "World Serrada Escrima Federation".
The {WSEF} serves two purposes, one purpose is to continue to
perpetuate the golden historical legacy of SGGM Angel Cabales, and the
pristine art of Serrada Escrima as it was personally taught to him
directly by SGGM Angel Cabales.

The second, and the primary reasons that the WSEF exist today, is to
continue to exchange, and to share the masterful
close-quarter-combative effectiveness of the art of Serrada Escrima
with all responsible conscientious minded people, and professional law
enforcement agencies on a national, and upon an international scale as
well. There are always hidden meanings behind every outward projection
or name.

The hidden meaning behind the {WSEF}, is "Weapon System Effectiveness
Factor". Today, within the countries of America,Turkey, Germany,
Australia, and in Switzerland as well, the "WSEF Masters of Excellence
DC/Serrada Escrima Training Programs" have been affirmatively
established. Because of SGGM Angel Cabales' strong concern in the area
of self-defense, his much coveted art known as "Serrada Escrima" is
now being taught to thousands of people all over the world. What a
great testimonial to the importance, and also to greatness of SGGM
Angel Cabales' many contributions within the sacred field of martial
arts.
