FMA Digest Vol 3/2006 Exerpts

Excerpts From
Filipino Martial Arts Digest Vol. No. 3/ 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------

In publishing the Special Edition of Cabales Serrada Escrima, there have come forth comments about the interview with Grandmaster Vincent Cabales Sr. That would like to be said. The issue was put forth in an effort to find out what it was like to be the son of a legend;
"Grandmaster Angel Cabales" and to find out where, and how Serrada Escrima was progressing since his passing away.
The FMAdigest apologizes if persons concerned were insulted. In an equal opportunity, and a one time situation,
The FMAdigest has added this "Declaration of Independence" written by Grandmaster Anthony Davis.

"These are his words and the FMAdigest holds no responsibility".

Declaration of Independence
By SGM *D*

I wish to make some personal comments concerning the 'Special Edition of Serrada Escrima' on my behalf, and others, that were commented on in the article, which was an interview with Vincent Cabales Sr..Essentially, Vincent Cabales Sr. was questioned about whether or not certain of Grandmaster Angel Cabales' Master graduate, and advanced graduate students fully earned their degrees, and whether or not any of these students are currently supporting him. The first one of Angel Cabales' students mentioned is Mark V. Wiley. First of all, I know for a fact that Mr. Wiley has gone above and beyond the call of duty in financing, and promoting the
"Cabales Serrada System of Escrima".

Mr. Wiley's track record speaks for itself. Additionally, after Grandmaster Angel Cabales' death, Mr. Wiley continued to promote
Serrada Escrima in conjunction with Vincent Cabales Sr..The main division between Mr. Wiley, and Vincent Cabales Sr., is that
Vincent Cabales Sr. is attempting to override his fathers authority, by replacing his fathers personal pre-set wishes, and business agreements with Mr. Wiley, "with his own agenda".

Because Mr. Wiley refused to be coerced, physically beaten, and blackmailed into paying Vincent Cabales Sr. a substantial amount of monies in 1999, in order to publish the "Secrets of Cabales Serrada Escrima", Vincent Cabales Sr. will not endorse, nor give any credibility to Mr. Wiley's projects. Vincent Cabales Sr. vehemently vents, and criticizes Master Darren Tibon in his interview regarding his integrity towards Angel Cabales, and also, he questions his full experience as one of Grandmaster Angel Cabales' Master graduate instructor's. I can personally attest to Master Tibon' expertise as being one of Grandmaster Angel Cabales' finest Master graduate instructors.

Additionally, after Angel Cabales' death in 1991, it was Master Darren Tibon who stepped up to the plate, and helped to support
Angel Cabales' widow, and two small children financially, and otherwise. Master Tibon has been extremely instrumental in helping to guide Grandmaster Angel Cabales' youngest son Gelmar Cabales in the way of "Cabales Serrada Escrima".

As far as the "Grandmaster" title that Vincent Cabales Sr. holds, there is no such title within the "Cabales Serrada System of Escrima". The highest title within Grandmaster Angel Cabales' Escrima system is "Masters Degree". "Grandmaster" is an honorary title that was bestowed upon Master Angel Cabales by myself, that evolved out of my early Filipino martial arts association located in,
San Francisco,CA..Prior to my acknowledging Angel Cabales as an "Honorary Grandmaster" everyone, including Angel Cabales himself, referred to him only as "Master Angel Cabales".

I challenge Vincent Cabales Sr., to share with the public any written, or recorded documentation stating that he was bequeathed the title of "Grandmaster" by his father the late Angel O. Cabales. As far as being the successor to his father's "Serrada System of Escrima",
Grandmaster Angel Cabales has left behind many successors, including all of the people that Vincent Cabales Sr. has discredited, and downgraded  in his FMAdigest interview. Grandmaster Angel Cabales never officially appointed anyone as the primary dictator of his Escrima system. In essence, none of Grandmaster Angel Cabales' students have sole monopoly of the art of "Serrada Escrima".

All of my allegiance is strictly to the late SGGM Angel Cabales. Because of my allegiance to the founder of "Cabales Serrada Escrima",         the "World Serrada Escrima Federation" will always continue to exist as an independent worldwide Filipino martial arts federation.

Eloquent, Educated & Prolific in FMA Propogation

It is known throughout the Filipino Martial Arts as well as Martial Arts industry as a whole, there is no more dedicated researcher and author that Dr. Mark Wiley.  His efforts in fact finding, exploration and study of many systems of the FMA are known world wide.  Without his dedication to date, many of the founders of many FMA would not be known to this day.

Through Dr. Wiley's publications that the name of GM Angel Cabales became well known.  It is through Dr. Wiley's self determination and perseverance which allowed him to provide us all with his gift of knowledge from many of the GrandMasters no longer with us.

As in the past Dr. Wiley is continuing with his preservation of knowledge by releasing additional publications, documenting the outstanding technique and knowledge in FMA.

The WSEF, GM *D* and myself  GM *S* are looking forward to continued cooperation, collaboration and support with GM Mark Wiley.

The Eleven Second Death Match

The Eleven Second Death Match

by | on December 31, 2012

A Very Long Death Match

Grandmaster Angel Cabales did not believe in having long fights. Most of his challenge death matchmatches lasted only 3-5 seconds with the exception of one. It lasted nearly 11 seconds and that Escrimador he nearly killed. With a ever building reputation as a highly skilled Escrimador challengers would always surface. There was a certain Escrimador who had been beating all of the opponents that he challenged in the area and felt that he was the man who cold take down Grandmaster Angel Cabales. One day while returning from Manila to visit his village before going on a voyage as Grandmaster Angel got off the boat his friends informed him of the man who wished to challenge Angel to a Death Match, Grandmaster Angel Cabales was  not shaken by this news and replied “I am not hard to find”,  and went on his way home. While Grandmaster Angel Cabales was approaching a sugar cane field he spotted another traveler on the path as the two neared each other they came face to face.

The Death Match Begins

At first Angel tried to ignore the other traveler but the man spoke, stating ” I know who you are and I am the Escrimador that will beat you.” Grandmaster Angel Cabales calmly pulled his rattan from his sack and said, “you talk to much” at this point the Death Match was on. Immediately Angel’s  foe attacked with double sinawali strikes to Angel’s headdeath match 1 which Angel blocked and closed in on his death match opponent with abanico strikes to his attackers head. “That son of a gun surprised me” Cabales stated ” He blocked my strike and right away came back with a Redondo strike to the right side of my head.” Since the man was left handed the strike came very quickly and Angel was able to catch part of the blow with a shoulder block, but the strike did glance of the top of his head. “Once I felt the strike, I did a double strike and faked to his left lower body which opened him up. The first of the double strike, I aimed high to his left ribs which I knew he would block. Then I immediately flowed into to his lower ribs. He dropped a little and blocked and blocked the strike quickly, at which time I saw my chance for an opening. So I faked low to his kneecaps, which he reacted to instantly. When he dropped he left his head wide open enough for me to jam him and quickly hit him with my triple strike to his head. Pop! Pop! Pop! was the only sound I heard. His arms dropped against his body and he fell with his knees bent to the ground. As he laid on the ground on his side, his eyes rolled back so that i could only see the whites of his eyes. His ears and nose were bleeding and he stopped breathing for a few seconds. Then His breathing came back and he looked at me with amazement and fear I thought for a second I had killed him!”

The Death Match  Was That Escrimador’s Last

“When two Escrimadors play, all they have is first, their nerve, second, their skill, and third, their luck. The one that has less of the three will lose the fight and maybe their life. Yes I was very lucky that day”, exclaimed Grandmaster Cabales. “I could have been the one lying there, but I was lucky to block that one killing blow he threw at me with my shoulder block. I will always remember those eleven seconds and that his style of fighting was  almost like mine. Nobody ever lasted more than 3-5 seconds with me up until this time. But I almost killed that Escrimador that took me to the count of eleven!” Grandmaster Angel Cabales might have said he was lucky that day but deep down inside he knew it was his superior fighting skills In Cabales Serrada Escrima that he won that Death Match!
